Home MenuFree Smoke Detectors
The Broken Arrow Fire Department currently will offer one free smoke detector per home to anyone that needs one. These smoke alarms can be procured by calling Fire Department Administration Headquarters at 918-259-8360. Once your contact information is obtained, we will send fire department personnel to deliver the battery-operated smoke detector to your home.
It's not just important to make sure you have a smoke detector. It's just as important to make sure you have a working smoke detector. According to the National Fire Protection Association website, in the years 2009-2013, three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes without a smoke alarm, or the smoke alarms were not working. Do not unplug or disable your detector just simply because it keeps going off. These problems are often easily fixed by moving your alarm or changing your alarm type.
Remember to change your alarm battery when you change your clock for daylight savings. Some newer detectors have a special battery that you don't have to change. Instead you replace the device itself. Smoke detectors can become dusty or otherwise malfunction over time. Your average smoke detector should be changed every 3-5 years (per manufactures recommendations). Install smoke detectors on every level of the building, including the basement, and in every bedroom. The detector can be placed on the ceiling or on the wall; however, it is recommended that it be placed on the ceiling. The alarm should be no less than 6 inches from corners.
