Fleet Maintenance is responsible for maintaining and repairing the City's fleet of vehicles and construction equipment in such a way as to maximize their availability, serviceability and safety.
The City has a diversified fleet of approximately 1,200 units, including police cars, fire trucks, dump trucks, refuse trucks, tractors, trailers, mowers and a wide variety of construction-related equipment.
To keep those vehicles and equipment in safe and workable condition, a staff of 16 employees works at the Maintenance Center at 1700 W. Detroit. Included are a division chief, two lead mechanics, eight mechanics and two service mechanics. A day shift and an evening shift are utilized to keep down-time to a minimum. This is particularly critical when making repairs on snow plows and sanders, emergency vehicles (police and fire) and refuse trucks.
The division also maintains an inventory of vehicle parts and supplies, and utilizes a computerized management system to monitor and control the City's two fueling sites, schedule preventative maintenance work and repairs.
