K-9 Unit

The Broken Arrow Police K9 Unit has been supporting officers in the Patrol Division and Special Investigations Unit since 1984. The dogs are dual purpose patrol dogs that are capable of narcotics detection and can conduct searches for evidence as well as suspects attempting to elude capture in open areas or structures.

To date all of the dogs have been imported from Europe and are especially selected for their intelligence, temperament, and exceptional drive that suits them for Police work. Each team is certified for narcotics detection through the State of Oklahoma and meets the certification criteria established by the Council for Law Enforcement Education and Training (C.L.E.E.T.).

The K9 teams train on a weekly basis and assist law enforcement agencies from neighboring jurisdictions in the training and management of their individual K9 programs. All of the K9 teams are trained in Patrol functions in accordance with nationally recognized Police Working Dog standards.

The K9 Units also conducts demonstrations throughout the year at community events and for the Broken Arrow Public schools showcasing the exceptional capabilities of the dog teams and promoting the Police Department in the community.

Each year the K9 teams of the Broken Arrow Police department are credited with the apprehension of multiple criminal suspects, the successful recovery of evidence, and the detection of large quantities of narcotics that may otherwise be lost, if not for the unique abilities and specialty training of the K9 teams.

Traffic Specialist Unit

The BATSU Mission Statement: To improve the quality of life for our citizens, our commitment is to reduce the incidents of traffic related losses. This is accomplished through proactive education, aggressive enforcement, traffic management and engineering programs to preserve the welfare of the motoring public.

Broken Arrow Traffic Specialist Unit or B.A.T.S.U. is comprised of ten officers that are dedicated to the reduction in the loss of life and property by decreasing traffic related losses. Staffing in BATSU includes six collision investigators who also work enforcement duties as well as officers assigned to motorcycles for proactive traffic enforcement and two traffic supervisors.

Special Operations Team

The Broken Arrow Police Department's Special Operations Team (SOT) was established in 1986 and consists of 39 members who specialize in the area of tactical response and Crisis Negotiations. The SOT's main responsibilities consist of responding to armed and barricaded incidents, hostage situations, civil disorder and serving high-risk warrants. SOT is comprised of two groups: the Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiations Team.

The Tactical Team consists of 24 highly trained officers, as well as 5 Tactical Medics from the Broken Arrow Fire Department. The Tactical Team also has an Intelligence Investigator and a Technical Specialist who respond with the Team to critical incidents. The Tactical Team trains regularly on topics such as firearms, building searches, hostage rescue, various forms of breaching, and less lethal options, in order to effectively resolve critical incidents.

The Crisis Negotiations Team is comprised of eight (8) officers with varying duties and responsibilities within the agency who, in addition to their regular duties, are selected to train in crisis negotiations. The purpose of the Crisis Negotiation Unit is to provide negotiating strategies and conduct negotiations in high risk situations. The team is utilized in crisis situations such as barricaded subjects, hostage rescue, and suicidal subjects in an effort to resolve these incidents peacefully.

The Special Operations Team is on call 24 hours a day for any unit within the department. SOT also assists other local, state and federal agencies with the resolution of critical incidents and high risk warrant services and conducts training for the Broken Arrow Police Department as well as other agencies.

Bike Patrol

The Broken Arrow Police Bicycle Unit is comprised of 21 current members. Quiet, cost efficient, and amazingly effective, mountain bikes are able to bridge the gap between automobiles and foot patrol. Bicycle officers are better able to use all of their senses, including smell and hearing, to detect and address crime. Our Bike Patrol officers are often able to approach suspects virtually unnoticed, even in full uniform. These officers are used in various areas of the city and in many different types of patrols from burglary suppression to special events.

Reserve Police Officers

The Broken Arrow Police Reserve has 16 officers, who provided over 3,500 hours of public service in 2018. The volunteer Officers act as a backup to the full-time Patrol Officers thus providing essential services during special events and natural disasters. Each Reserve Officer must provide a minimum of 200 service hours per year with a 10 hour minimum per month, and must meet several training requirements and certifications.

Reserve Officers provide security during the annual Rooster Days Celebration, as well as numerous community events throughout the year. The City’s annual parades have traffic control provided by Reserve Officers. Uniforms, equipment and duty firearm are provided by the Broken Arrow Police Department. The department provides annual in-service training and firearm qualifications.

The Reserves have five bicycle officers who provide additional mobile security during parades and special events. Bicycles provide mobility not possible by a car and are able to cover a much larger geographic area than by foot patrol.

The Reserves also assist Patrol in transporting prisoners, conducting directed patrols, traffic enforcement and neighborhood meetings.
