Background

What began as a grassroots program through the Texas Department of Transportation in 1985 has spread throughout America -- in states and cities. Now Americans everywhere are adopting highways, streets and parks.

In Broken Arrow, the Adopt-A-Mile program began in 1988 as a Chamber of Commerce endeavor. A few years later the responsibility of linking civic-minded individuals, businesses, churches and organizations with our streets and parks was handed over to the City of Broken Arrow.

The inclusion of Parks and Trails into the program has given another opportunity for families to participate in the program. Parks are a perfect place for families with children to participate. The Liberty Trail is a pedestrian and a cyclist’s avenue.

Goal

The goal of the program is to have each linear right-of-way mile, each public park and the Liberty Trail "adopted" by a community club, volunteer, church, business or school group. The program is a yearly adoption with an annual renewal based on the periodic cleanups conducted.

Your group's responsibility

Groups are responsible for their own cleanups, a minimum of four times a year of their right-of-way, park or trail and reporting cleanup dates.

Annual fee

The program is a yearly commitment with an annual renewal fee of $50 for businesses or $25 for individuals or non-profits. This fee ensures an ongoing commitment to the program as well as covers the signage cost and any sign maintenance. The City posts the signs to recognize the group's effort to keep the mile/park/trail clean and litter free.
